API Mocking

API mocking is the practice of simulating an API's responses with a fake server so developers can build and test integrations without access to the live system.

Mocks return predefined responses for given requests, letting teams validate logic, error handling, and edge cases while the real API is under development, rate-limited, or unavailable in test environments.

A practical example

Example: an integration team building a contact-sync must wait two weeks for sandbox access from a vendor.

They mock the vendor's endpoints from the API reference, finish the sync logic and error handling in parallel, and only need one validation round once the sandbox arrives.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether the vendor provides a sandbox or mock server, or whether your team must build mocks from the API reference.
  • Check that mocks can simulate error responses and rate limits, not only successful calls, so failure paths get tested.
  • Confirm mock behavior can be kept in sync with API version changes, so tests do not pass against outdated responses.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Mocks only reflect the API as documented; undocumented behavior, quirks, and real data volumes surface only against the live system, so final validation still requires real access.
