Data Serialization

Data serialization is the process of converting records and events into a wire format — such as JSON, protobuf, or CSV — so systems can transmit and interpret them.

Unlike data mapping, which decides which fields correspond, serialization determines message size, parsing speed, schema strictness, and whether two systems can understand each other at all.

A practical example

Example: a behavioral clickstream sent as verbose JSON consumes far more API quota per event than the same stream in a compact binary format, changing how many events fit within your plan's limits.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Which formats does each integration endpoint actually accept, and can they negotiate?
  • Is the format schema-enforced, so malformed messages fail fast instead of corrupting data?
  • How does the vendor meter API usage — per call or per payload size?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Compact binary formats save bandwidth but are harder to debug and inspect than readable text formats; the choice trades human visibility for efficiency.
