Deployment Promotion Policy

A deployment promotion policy is a written set of criteria an automation change must satisfy in a sandbox or staging environment before it may move to production.

It defines the gates themselves: required test coverage, validation results, and environment parity. The approval act is separate; this policy states what earns approval.

A practical example

Example: a RevOps team requires that any scoring model change run against a 30-day historical dataset in staging, produce a diff report of score shifts, and pass a peer review before the same configuration is promoted to production.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether the platform supports distinct sandbox and production environments with configuration export between them.
  • Check if you can run changes against historical data and compare outcomes before promoting them.
  • Confirm the policy can be enforced in the tool, such as blocking publish until checklist items are marked complete.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Strict gates slow down urgent fixes; teams need a defined fast-track path for emergency changes or the policy will be bypassed under pressure.
