Error Handling

Error handling is the per-step policy decision about what happens when an automation step fails: halt the workflow, skip the step, retry, or continue. Retry logic and dead letter queues are specific mechanisms within it.

Most teams inherit platform defaults without reviewing them, which is how silent failures produce divergent data.

A practical example

Example: a workflow that silently skips a failed CRM update leaves the CRM record stale while the marketing platform shows the new value — two systems disagree for weeks until someone notices.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Can you configure failure behavior per step, or is it one global setting?
  • Does the platform notify a named owner when a step fails, or only write to a log?
  • Are retried steps idempotent, so a retry cannot create duplicate records?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Aggressive retry policies can mask systemic problems by repeatedly papering over them; pair retries with alerting so recurring failures surface to a person.
