Timeout Handling

Timeout handling governs the ambiguous case where an automation step neither succeeds nor fails: an API call or webhook that simply never returns.

Unlike retry logic, which responds to explicit errors, timeout policy requires two decisions: how long to wait, and what to do next — retry, alert someone, or mark the run indeterminate.

A practical example

Example: an enrichment step calls a third-party data provider that hangs for ten minutes. With no timeout defined, the contact's workflow run stalls invisibly, and no downstream email or score update ever fires.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Confirm whether timeouts are configurable per step or only globally.
  • Ask what status a timed-out run receives and whether it can be resumed or must restart.
  • Check whether timeout events trigger alerts or appear in error dashboards.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Timeouts set too short can abandon slow-but-successful calls and cause duplicate side effects when retried.
