ETL (Extract, Transform, Load)

ETL stands for Extract, Transform, Load: a three-step integration pattern where data is pulled from a source (extract), reshaped into the destination's required form (transform), and written into the destination (load).

The term comes from data warehousing but now describes most marketing and CRM integrations. A related pattern, ELT, loads raw data first and transforms it inside the destination, which suits systems with strong in-database processing.

A practical example

Example: an ETL job extracts yesterday's form submissions from a landing page tool, transforms them by splitting names and mapping campaign tags, and loads them into the CRM as new contacts each morning.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether the vendor's 'ETL' is a scheduled batch process, an event-driven flow, or marketing shorthand for simple field copying.
  • Check where transformations run: in the platform, in your warehouse, or in custom code you must maintain.
  • Confirm visibility: can you see row counts and errors for each extract, transform and load step?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Tradeoff: batch ETL is predictable and cheap but introduces delay; event-driven pipelines are faster but harder to debug when steps fail.
