GraphQL

GraphQL is a query language for APIs in which the client specifies exactly which fields it wants and receives only those in a single request.

Unlike REST, where each endpoint returns a fixed payload, GraphQL lets one query pull a contact, their deals and recent activity together, reducing round trips and over-fetching.

For automation buyers, a GraphQL API can simplify building custom workflows because data shaping happens on the client side.

It is a recognized technology (developed by Facebook, now governed by the GraphQL Foundation), not a vendor-specific product.

A practical example

Example: a reporting script uses one GraphQL query to fetch every account with its owner, open opportunities and last activity date, instead of chaining four REST calls per account.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask for rate limiting details: GraphQL's flexible queries make cost-based limits common, so understand how query complexity is priced.
  • Check whether the schema is publicly documented and whether introspection is enabled for your workspace.
  • Confirm support for pagination, filtering and mutations (writes), not just reads.

Limitations and tradeoffs

GraphQL shifts complexity to the client: teams need schema knowledge and query tooling, and poorly bounded queries can strain the source system if the vendor lacks complexity limits.
