Message Queue

A message queue is a buffer that holds messages or tasks until a consumer processes them, typically first-in-first-out. Producers add messages without waiting; consumers pull them at their own pace.

In automation, queues absorb traffic spikes, retry failed processing, and let slow steps run asynchronously. The key buying questions concern delivery guarantees, ordering, and visibility of what is waiting in the queue.

A practical example

Example: a campaign tool enqueues 50,000 personalized emails during a launch; the sending service processes the queue at a rate that respects the email provider's limits instead of failing under load.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether delivery is at-least-once (duplicates possible) and how consumers deduplicate.
  • Check whether strict ordering is guaranteed per queue, per key, or not at all.
  • Review observability: can you see queue depth, message age, and dead-letter contents without extra tooling?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Queues shift complexity rather than remove it: you inherit responsibility for poison messages, retry storms, and backlog monitoring, so budget operational attention accordingly.
