Message Testing

Message testing evaluates which core value proposition, angle or framing resonates with a target audience, usually across multiple channels and formats at once.

Unlike copy testing, which compares specific wording, message testing asks whether the underlying promise, such as 'save time' versus 'reduce risk', moves buyers.

A practical example

Example: a SaaS vendor runs one campaign angle built around cost savings and another around compliance risk, using matched emails, ads and landing pages, then compares meeting requests per angle.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Check whether the platform can hold a message constant across email, ads and pages so results reflect the message, not channel differences.
  • Ask if results can be segmented by persona or industry to see which angle fits which audience.
  • Confirm the tool tracks downstream actions like meetings or trials, not just clicks.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Message testing requires consistent execution across channels; if teams improvise copy per channel, results conflate the message with its delivery.
