Multivariate Testing

Multivariate testing (MVT) changes several elements simultaneously and measures how each combination performs, including interactions between elements.

Unlike A/B testing, which isolates one variable, MVT answers which pairing of headline and image works best, but needs much larger traffic to reach significance.

A practical example

Example: a team tests 2 headlines against 2 hero images, creating 4 combinations, and splits traffic evenly to learn whether a data-led headline only works with a product screenshot.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Check the maximum number of combinations and how traffic is allocated across them.
  • Ask whether the tool reports interaction effects between elements, not just each element in isolation.
  • Confirm minimum traffic guidance per combination so you can judge feasibility before committing.

Limitations and tradeoffs

MVT divides traffic across many variants, so each combination receives a small sample; on low-traffic pages tests may run for months or end inconclusively.
