Copy Testing

Copy testing is the practice of comparing written message variants, such as email body text, ad headlines or landing page paragraphs, against a response metric before committing budget.

It focuses on wording itself, separate from design, audience or offer decisions.

A practical example

Example: a team drafts two versions of a cold email, one feature-led and one problem-led, sends each to a small random slice of the list, and compares reply rates before rolling out the stronger wording.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Check whether the tool supports testing copy within emails, ads and pages from one workflow, or per channel only.
  • Ask how variants are distributed and whether results are reported with confidence levels.
  • Confirm you can test copy without rebuilding the whole asset, such as swapping only the body text.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Copy testing measures response, not why wording works; a winning variant may reflect timing or list composition as much as the words, so rerun important tests.
