Middleware

Middleware is a broad label for software that sits between applications and enables them to communicate — handling translation, authentication, routing, or data transformation.

In modern automation buying, the term often refers to integration platforms or API gateways rather than a single product category.

Because it is a label rather than a standard, buyers should ask vendors to specify exactly which functions their middleware performs.

A practical example

Example: a company uses an integration layer between its CRM, billing system, and support desk so each system authenticates once against the layer instead of maintaining point-to-point connections with every other system.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask the vendor to enumerate which middleware functions they cover: transformation, auth, routing, protocol translation, or only some.
  • Check whether the layer adds observable latency to every call and what the failure mode is when it goes down.
  • Confirm how data passing through is logged, encrypted, and governed for compliance.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Because 'middleware' has no fixed definition, two vendors using the same word may sell very different scopes; require a function-by-function breakdown rather than accepting the term at face value.
