Monitoring

Monitoring is the practice of tracking predefined metrics against known thresholds and alerting when they break: runs completed per hour, error rates, queue depth, integration latency.

It answers questions you already know to ask, which makes it the operational complement to observability, which handles questions you could not anticipate.

A practical example

Example: a team sets an alert if the nightly data-sync completes later than 6 a.m. or if workflow error rates exceed 2% in any hour, so on-call staff investigate before customers notice missing data.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask which metrics are tracked out of the box and whether custom metrics can be defined per workflow.
  • Check how alerts are delivered, email, webhook, chat, and whether escalation paths are configurable.
  • Confirm alert thresholds support sustained conditions, not just single spikes, to reduce noise.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Tradeoff: monitoring only covers what you predefined; unanticipated failure modes pass silently, which is why it pairs with observability rather than replacing it.
