OAuth

OAuth (Open Authorization) is an open protocol that lets an application access a user's data on another service without handling that user's password.

The user approves access, and the application receives tokens it can exchange for API calls.

In automation buying, OAuth matters because it determines how securely and sustainably your platform connects to CRMs, ad platforms, and email services — and what breaks when tokens expire.

A practical example

Example: an automation platform connects to a company's Google Ads account via OAuth; the marketing manager grants access once, and the platform refreshes its token automatically instead of storing credentials.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask which OAuth grant types the platform supports (authorization code, client credentials) and which flows fit your systems.
  • Check how token refresh and revocation are handled: does a revoked token fail silently or alert someone?
  • Confirm whether the platform supports least-privilege scopes or requests broad access by default.

Limitations and tradeoffs

OAuth support is table stakes, not a differentiator; the real differences lie in scope handling, token lifecycle management, and what happens during re-authorization — ask about those specifics.
