OpenAPI Specification

The OpenAPI Specification (formerly Swagger) is a standard, machine-readable format for describing REST APIs: endpoints, parameters, request and response schemas, and authentication.

Vendors publish OpenAPI documents so developers and tools can generate clients, validate payloads, and understand integrations without reading prose docs.

For automation buyers, the quality of a vendor's OpenAPI spec is a practical signal of how much work their API integration will take.

A practical example

Example: before buying, a team downloads a vendor's OpenAPI file and imports it into a client generator to see whether the endpoints they need — contact create, custom field update — are documented with real schemas.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Download the vendor's OpenAPI document and verify it covers the endpoints your workflows actually need.
  • Check whether schemas are fully defined or full of generic 'object' placeholders that force guesswork.
  • Ask whether the spec is versioned and updated in step with API changes, or generated as an afterthought.

Limitations and tradeoffs

A complete OpenAPI spec describes the API but does not guarantee its behavior — rate limits, eventual consistency, and undocumented quirks still live outside the file, so test against a sandbox.
