Retry Logic

Retry logic is the set of rules a platform uses when an API call or workflow step fails, typically due to a temporary issue such as throttling or a network error.

Good retry behavior includes automatic reattempts with delays, a cap on attempts, and clear handling of records that ultimately fail, rather than silent data loss.

A practical example

Example: if a webhook delivery fails because the receiving tool is briefly down, retry logic with exponential backoff might reattempt after 1, 5 and 30 minutes before flagging the record for manual review.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask how many automatic retries occur, over what time window, and whether the schedule is configurable.
  • Check what happens after final failure: is there an error log, alert or dead-letter queue you can act on?
  • Confirm whether retries are idempotent, meaning a retried operation will not create duplicate records.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Retries cannot fix permanent failures such as invalid data or revoked credentials; those still require monitoring and human intervention.
