Rules Engine

A rules engine is the component that evaluates conditions and applies actions, such as 'if deal value is above X and source is webinar, assign to senior reps'.

Its expressive power, how many conditions can be combined, whether it supports nested logic, custom fields and time-based rules, determines how much of your business logic lives in the platform versus in custom code.

A practical example

Example: a routing rule might require three conditions combined with AND plus one exception with OR; a weak rules engine forces you to split this into multiple workflows that are harder to maintain.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Test whether the engine supports nested condition groups (AND within OR), not just flat condition lists.
  • Check whether rules can reference custom fields and data from connected systems, not only native fields.
  • Ask how rule changes are tested and previewed before they affect live records.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Very complex rule sets can become hard to audit; some teams deliberately keep logic simple and handle exceptions manually.
