Workflow Engine

A workflow engine is the runtime that executes automations: it interprets your defined steps, manages state between them, handles triggers, and applies branching logic.

Engines differ fundamentally in execution model, some run linear sequences, others support loops, parallel branches, and long-running waits, and that model determines which use cases are practical.

A practical example

Example: a nurture flow that waits up to 30 days for a reply, branches on engagement, and loops through follow-ups requires an engine that supports durable waits, not just linear step execution.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask how the engine handles long-running waits and what happens to state during platform maintenance
  • Compare step, execution, and concurrency limits against your expected workflow volume
  • Test the observability: can you see per-step status, errors, and data passed between steps

Limitations and tradeoffs

A powerful engine is only as good as its editor; some engines with strong runtimes expose them through builders that make complex logic harder to maintain than code.
