Workflow Recovery

Workflow recovery is how a platform resumes automations after an interruption, such as an API outage, a failed step, or a platform incident.

Good recovery preserves workflow state, retries from the exact failure point, and prevents both lost work and duplicate side effects like double-sent emails or repeated CRM updates.

A practical example

Example: a bulk enrichment workflow fails halfway through 10,000 records when the enrichment API goes down; recovery resumes from record 4,317 without re-processing completed records or skipping the rest.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether failed runs resume from the failure point or restart from the beginning
  • Test idempotency: does re-running a step risk duplicate sends or repeated writes to connected systems
  • Compare alerting: how quickly and through which channels are you notified of stalled workflows

Limitations and tradeoffs

Automatic recovery can mask systemic problems; if failures retry silently forever, teams stop noticing broken integrations, so pair recovery with clear failure escalation.
