SDK (Software Development Kit)

An SDK is a packaged set of libraries, code samples, and documentation that lets developers integrate with a platform without writing raw API calls from scratch.

SDK quality signals how seriously a vendor treats engineering buyers: current libraries, typed methods, and error handling reduce integration time and long-term maintenance burden.

A practical example

Example: your team builds a Node.js service that enrolls customers into lifecycle workflows; a maintained SDK with typed methods means days of work instead of weeks of hand-rolled API wrappers.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Check which languages have official SDKs and when each was last updated
  • Compare whether SDKs cover the endpoints you need or only a subset of the API
  • Review the changelog and open issues to gauge how quickly bugs are fixed

Limitations and tradeoffs

A polished SDK can mask a weak underlying API; if the SDK lacks an endpoint, you inherit raw API work anyway, so evaluate both layers.
