Task Orchestration

Task orchestration is the coordination of multiple automated tasks so they run in the right order, with dependencies respected and failures handled.

It differs from a simple workflow trigger: orchestration manages chains where step B must wait for step A, run in parallel where possible, and retry or skip intelligently when something fails.

A practical example

Example: a nightly pipeline extracts CRM data, waits for the extract to finish, enriches records in parallel batches, and only then triggers a segmentation refresh, skipping the final step if enrichment fails.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask how the platform represents dependencies visually and whether non-developers can modify them
  • Test behavior when one parallel branch fails: does the whole chain halt or continue where safe
  • Compare concurrency limits and queueing when many orchestrated chains run simultaneously

Limitations and tradeoffs

Deep orchestration control often comes with engineering-grade complexity; marketing teams may find powerful orchestrators harder to operate than simpler linear builders.
