Unit Testing

Unit testing checks a piece of decision logic in isolation: given defined sample inputs, does a scoring formula or routing condition produce the expected output?

Integration testing verifies that systems connect; unit testing verifies that the rule itself is correct before it runs against real records.

A practical example

Example: a scoring rule adds 10 points when job title contains 'director'. A unit test feeds it sample titles — including 'Assistant Director' — and shows the rule mis-scores that case before deployment.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether scoring and routing rules can be executed against sample records before publishing.
  • Confirm test cases cover boundary inputs, not just typical values.
  • Check whether rule changes require passing tests or can ship untested.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Rules without isolated tests ship mis-scoring to the entire database on every edit, and the damage is usually discovered weeks later in sales feedback, not in QA.
