Regression Testing

Regression testing is the practice of re-running a fixed set of test cases after every change, to confirm that behavior which used to work still works.

In automation, it protects established workflows, integrations and lifecycle journeys from silent breakage when a related system, field or rule changes.

A practical example

Example: before switching email providers, a team runs its regression suite: sample records flow through every major journey, and the tests confirm tracking pixels, tagging rules and CRM updates still behave as expected.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether the platform can execute workflows against test records without sending real messages to real contacts.
  • Check if test cases can be saved as reusable suites that run automatically after each change.
  • Confirm failures produce a clear diff between expected and actual outcomes, not just a pass/fail flag.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Tradeoff: suites grow stale as workflows evolve; unmaintained regression tests fail often or, worse, pass while validating outdated behavior.
