Webhook

A webhook is an HTTP callback where one system sends data to another the moment an event happens, instead of the receiver polling for changes.

Webhooks make automations reactive, such as enrolling a contact the instant a form is submitted, but they depend on the receiving endpoint being available and correctly handling each delivery.

A practical example

Example: when a deal moves to a closed-won stage in your CRM, the CRM sends a webhook that triggers an onboarding workflow within seconds, with no scheduled sync needed.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask how failed deliveries are retried and for how long before an event is dropped
  • Test whether you can inspect payload history and replay a missed event manually
  • Compare rate limits and ordering guarantees when many events fire at once

Limitations and tradeoffs

Webhooks are fire-and-forget by default; without retries, logging, and replay tooling, a temporary outage on either side silently loses events.
