Disaster Recovery

Disaster recovery (DR) is the documented set of processes, tooling and data copies that restore a system after a serious failure such as data corruption, region outage or ransomware.

For marketing and CRM infrastructure, DR covers not just databases but automation configurations, integration credentials and campaign assets.

The two core metrics are RTO (recovery time objective, how long you tolerate being down) and RPO (recovery point objective, how much data loss you tolerate).

A practical example

Example: a sync job corrupts contact records overnight.

With an RPO of 24 hours and tested backups, the team restores the previous day's snapshot and re-runs the sync; without one, they manually rebuild weeks of lifecycle stage changes.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask vendors for documented RTO and RPO numbers and whether they are contractual or aspirational.
  • Confirm backups cover configuration and credentials, not only raw data, and that restore is self-service or vendor-initiated.
  • Request evidence of the last restore test, including date and scope, rather than a policy document alone.

Limitations and tradeoffs

DR commitments add cost and operational overhead; aggressive RTO and RPO targets typically require paid higher tiers or redundant deployments.
