Schema Migration

Schema migration is the managed process of changing the structure of database tables, such as adding fields, renaming columns, or splitting tables, while keeping dependent systems working.

In a marketing stack, every CRM restructure can break syncs, mappings, and attribution models that assume the old shape. A migration playbook makes these changes deliberate instead of disruptive.

A practical example

Label: example. Your team splits a free-text industry field into a picklist plus a segment column.

A scripted migration adds the new columns, backfills values, updates field mappings in the automation tool, and only then retires the old field.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether the vendor's connectors detect schema changes automatically or silently drop fields until someone remaps them.
  • Check that migrations can be staged and tested against a copy of production data before touching live tables.
  • Verify there is a rollback path: can the previous structure and mappings be restored if a downstream tool fails after the change?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Migrations are point-in-time changes and need coordination; without governance, repeated ad hoc edits drift into undocumented structures that no migration script can fully reverse.
