Schema Mapping

Schema mapping is the structural alignment of how data is organized between two systems, going beyond individual field links.

It covers how objects relate to each other, such as deciding whether a webinar registration becomes a contact, an activity on a contact, or a custom object, and how nested or repeated data is flattened.

A practical example

Example: an e-commerce platform stores orders with multiple line items, while the CRM stores a flat deal record; schema mapping defines whether each line item becomes a separate deal product or a single aggregated field.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask how the connector handles one-to-many relationships, such as orders to line items.
  • Check whether nested objects can be mapped or must be pre-flattened.
  • Confirm you can change object-level mapping later without rebuilding the integration.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Tradeoff: schema mapping decisions are hard to reverse once data flows, because changing structure later may require re-migrating historical records.
