Field Mapping

Field mapping is the configuration step that links each data field in one system to the corresponding field in another, such as connecting a CRM's "Company Name" to a marketing platform's "Account" property.

It defines what travels where, in which direction, and whether values are created, updated, or overwritten.

A practical example

Example: a webinar tool's "Job Title" field is mapped to the CRM's "Role" field, while the webinar's "Industry" field, which has no CRM equivalent, is deliberately left unmapped so it does not create clutter.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Confirm the connector supports mapping custom fields, not only standard ones.
  • Test whether mapping rules can differ for create versus update scenarios.
  • Check how the tool surfaces unmapped or conflicting fields during setup.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Tradeoff: rigid, prebuilt mappings are faster to launch but often force you to reshape your data to fit the vendor's model, which creates cleanup work later.
