Schema Compatibility

Schema compatibility defines the rules for whether a new version of a data structure can safely replace or coexist with previous versions.

Common modes include backward compatibility, where new consumers can read old data; forward compatibility, where old consumers can read new data; and full compatibility, which requires both directions at once.

A practical example

Example: adding an optional "campaign_id" field to an event schema is backward compatible, because consumers built for the older version simply ignore the new field; making it required would break them.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask which compatibility modes the vendor enforces and whether you can choose per schema.
  • Test what happens when a producer sends data that violates the registered compatibility rules.
  • Check whether the tool explains exactly which consumers a proposed change would break.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Tradeoff: enforcing full compatibility is safest but makes genuinely breaking changes slow and expensive, sometimes requiring dual-write periods or new event names.
