Glossary / Evaluation and implementation guide

Schema Evolution

Schema evolution is the practice of changing data structures over time, such as adding, renaming, or removing fields, while keeping connected systems working.

It treats structure change as a normal, planned process with rules, rather than an emergency fix every time a team adds a property to a form or an object.

A practical example

Example: marketing adds a "Lead Source Detail" field to the lead object; under an evolution plan, the field is first added as optional, synced in one direction, and only promoted to required after all consumers confirm they handle it.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether the platform detects upstream field additions automatically or fails silently.
  • Check if you can stage schema changes before they affect live syncs.
  • Confirm there is a version history showing who changed what and when.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Tradeoff: strict evolution processes slow down everyday changes, so teams must balance safety gates against the speed marketing and product teams expect.
