Catalog Merchandising

Catalog merchandising is the practice of arranging which products appear, in what order, across category pages, search results, and recommendations. It concerns assortment presentation, not feed transport to external channels.

Typical controls include pinning items, boosting margins or new arrivals, and demoting out-of-stock products.

A practical example

Example: a garden retailer pins its best-margin planters to the top of the 'Outdoor' category each spring and automatically demotes items with fewer than five units in stock.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether merchandising rules can be scheduled by season or campaign and revert automatically.
  • Check if rules apply consistently across category pages, onsite search, and recommendation slots.
  • Test how rules interact with personalization: does a pinned item override a shopper's relevance ranking?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Manual pinning and boosting need ongoing attention; stale rules can push sold-out or outdated products to top positions.
