Product Catalog Readiness

Product catalog readiness is a launch acceptance decision: are product records complete, accurate, and consistent enough to sell on your target channels?

It is a gate you pass at go-live, distinct from product data governance, which is the ongoing ownership and approval process after launch.

A practical example

Label: example. Before migrating to a new platform, a furniture seller defines readiness criteria: every SKU has dimensions, materials, at least three images, and a mapped category.

Records failing the checklist stay out of the initial launch batch.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Define a written checklist of required fields per channel and measure what percentage of SKUs currently passes it.
  • Test whether images, variants, and translations render correctly in a staging environment, not just in spreadsheets.
  • Confirm who signs off on readiness and whether there is a dated target for fixing failing records.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Readiness is a snapshot; catalogs drift immediately after launch, so a passed gate does not guarantee data quality over time.
