Checkout Abandonment Recovery

Checkout abandonment recovery is the practice of contacting shoppers who started checkout, entered details, and left before paying, usually by email, SMS, or retargeting.

It differs from checkout optimization, which changes the checkout interface to prevent abandonment in the first place; recovery acts after the fact.

It also differs from cart abandonment recovery because the shopper went further: contact details may already be captured, enabling more direct follow-up.

A practical example

Example: a home goods store sends a message two hours after someone abandons at the payment step, reminding them the order is saved and offering help with a payment method that failed, without applying any discount on the first contact.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether the vendor captures contact details at the start of checkout, since recovery is impossible if emails are only collected after payment.
  • Check how recovery messages are suppressed when the shopper completes the purchase, returns via another channel, or opts out, to avoid awkward follow-ups.
  • Confirm whether incentives in recovery messages can be gated by rules, such as only after a second contact or only for high-value carts.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Recovery depends on consent and privacy rules for using contact data captured at checkout; messaging practices that are acceptable in one market may breach rules in another.
