Payment Failure Recovery

Payment failure recovery is the practice of sorting declined charges into categories before acting on them. A soft decline, such as insufficient funds, may succeed on a later retry.

A hard decline, such as an expired card, needs a customer update instead. Recovery workflows decide which action fits each category.

A practical example

Example: a monthly charge fails because the card expires this month. The system flags it as a hard decline, pauses retries, and emails the customer a card update link rather than charging again.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask how the tool distinguishes decline codes from your gateways and whether you can map codes to actions.
  • Check whether retry timing is configurable per decline type, not one fixed schedule for all failures.
  • Confirm that customer-facing recovery messages can be suppressed for failures that should never reach the buyer.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Recovery rules depend on the decline codes your processors return, and codes vary by provider and region, so mappings need ongoing maintenance.
