Payment Authorization

Payment authorization is an issuer’s approval or decline of a payment request. For a typical card payment, approval can reserve an amount for later capture; it does not itself transfer funds to the merchant.

The supported behavior and validity period depend on the payment method, provider and transaction conditions.

A practical example

Example: a store authorizes a card payment and checks the provider’s capture deadline before shipping. If fulfillment will exceed that window, it follows the provider’s supported process instead of assuming the original authorization remains valid.

What to evaluate before investing

  • How long do authorizations from your provider typically remain valid, and what happens to the hold if capture is delayed beyond it?
  • Can the authorized amount be adjusted or partially captured, for split shipments or changed orders?
  • Does the provider expose authorization status and decline reasons in a way your order system can act on automatically?

Limitations and tradeoffs

An authorization can expire or become unusable before capture. Confirm validity, cancellation and adjustment rules for the payment method; approval is not a guarantee of final settlement or protection from later disputes.
