A practical example
Example: a beauty retailer refunds an order that had already earned points.
The automation must claw back those points, and if the customer already spent them, decide whether the balance can go negative or the difference is written off.
What to evaluate before investing
- Ask how the system handles refunds, chargebacks, and partial returns: are points or benefits reversed automatically, and what happens if they were already redeemed?
- Check whether grants are tied to payment events rather than order placement, so benefits are not issued for orders that never get paid.
- Verify idempotency: if the same order event arrives twice through an integration, does the customer receive one grant or two?
Limitations and tradeoffs
Automation reduces manual work but concentrates risk in rules and integrations; a misconfigured trigger can issue benefits at scale before anyone notices.
