API Connectivity

API connectivity describes whether two systems can actually reach each other and exchange data: network access, authentication, supported protocols and rate limits all determine it.

It is about achievable reach, not about who enforces rules on the traffic.

A practical example

Example: your MAP is cloud-hosted but the ERP sits behind a corporate firewall with IP allowlisting. Connectivity testing before signing reveals you need a middleware layer or a VPN route, not just an API key.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Request the vendor's connectivity requirements: IP ranges, ports, authentication methods and any proxy or firewall prerequisites.
  • Ask which systems are reachable only through paid middleware or iPaaS connectors rather than direct native connections.
  • Run a connectivity test against a sandbox of your actual CRM or data warehouse before contract signature.

Limitations and tradeoffs

A working connection is not the same as useful data flow; connectivity can pass while fields, objects or rate limits still block real syncs.
