API Quota

An API quota is the total volume of API calls a vendor allows over a billing period — per day, per month, or per plan tier.

Quotas are distinct from rate limits: a quota is a budget you can exhaust, a rate limit is a speed cap you can hit.

Exceeding a quota typically means throttling, extra fees, or blocked calls until the period resets.

A practical example

Example: a plan allows 100,000 API calls per month.

A two-way CRM sync with per-record reads and writes consumes several calls per contact change, so a busy week of list imports can consume a large share of the monthly budget.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask exactly which operations count against the quota — reads, writes, webhooks, retries — and get it in writing.
  • Model your expected volume: contacts, sync frequency, and fields per record, then compare against the stated quota.
  • Check what happens at the ceiling: hard stop, degraded sync, or overage billing, and whether you get usage dashboards and alerts.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Quotas that look generous at signup can be consumed by hidden callers — retries, health checks, and background syncs all spend the same budget. Ask for per-operation usage reporting before committing.
