API Contract Test

An API contract test verifies that an integration still honors the agreed interface between two systems: the endpoints called, the fields exchanged, the formats expected, and the error behaviors promised.

It tests the interface agreement itself, distinct from Integration Testing, which checks end-to-end behavior across the whole workflow.

Contract tests run against a specification or recorded examples, so they catch vendor API changes before release rather than after production breaks.

A practical example

Example: your lead push expects a contact object with email, company size, and a specific date format. Before each release, a contract test compares the CRM's current API responses against that agreement.

The vendor renames a field in a minor update; the test fails in staging, and your team adapts the mapping before any lead sync fails.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether contract tests run automatically in CI and on a schedule against the live vendor API.
  • Verify the contract source: a formal specification, recorded traffic, or hand-maintained examples.
  • Check failure reporting detail, so a renamed field is identified precisely, not just a generic mismatch.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Contract tests validate the agreed surface only; they won't detect logic errors in your own workflow or behavioral quirks that only appear under production data volumes.
