API Health Check

An API health check is a lightweight, repeated probe that verifies a connected API is alive and responding correctly, usually a scheduled call to a status endpoint or a minimal real request with an expected response.

It answers one question: is this connection working right now? It is a proactive liveness probe, distinct from API Monitoring, which collects broader performance metrics such as latency, error rates, and throughput over time.

A practical example

Example: your CRM connector's credentials expire silently after a vendor-side change. A health check running every five minutes starts receiving 401 responses and alerts the ops channel within one cycle.

Without it, the dead connection could drop campaign data for days before anyone notices missing leads.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask what the probe actually calls: a dedicated status endpoint or a representative real request.
  • Verify alert routing and whether a failing check escalates if unacknowledged.
  • Confirm the check frequency and whether it consumes your request quota meaningfully.

Limitations and tradeoffs

A passing health check proves liveness only; an API can respond to a minimal probe while real sync requests still fail due to payload or permission issues.
