API Mediation

API mediation is the practice of placing an intermediary between two systems to translate, secure, route or throttle their API traffic.

The intermediary can be an integration platform, middleware service or custom service; its job is to absorb differences so neither endpoint must change when the other does.

A practical example

Example: your CRM vendor changes its authentication from OAuth 1 to OAuth 2. With mediation, you update one middleware configuration; without it, you rework every integration that calls the CRM directly.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether the vendor's connectors sit in a mediation layer you can configure, or whether integrations call external APIs directly.
  • Check how the platform handles version upgrades of third-party APIs: who updates the connector, and how fast?
  • Test whether you can add transformation or filtering rules in the mediation layer without custom code.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Mediation adds a component to run and monitor; a poorly governed intermediary becomes a single point of failure and a bottleneck for debugging.
