API Monitoring

API monitoring is the ongoing collection of metrics and alerts about API-based integrations: response latency, error rates, success versus failure counts per sync job, and availability trends across days or weeks.

It turns isolated incidents into visible patterns, such as a connector whose error rate climbs every Friday during batch windows.

It is broader than an API Health Check's simple liveness probing; monitoring tracks how well the connection performs, not just whether it responds.

A practical example

Example: your team notices lead pushes to the CRM succeed 99 percent of the time, but enrichment API calls fail 8 percent of the time during peak hours.

Monitoring dashboards show the pattern correlates with rate-limit responses, so you reschedule enrichment batches and cut failures to under 1 percent.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask which metrics are collected per connection and whether dashboards separate sync jobs by direction.
  • Verify alert thresholds are configurable and can distinguish sustained degradation from single failures.
  • Check retention and export of historical metrics for vendor performance reviews.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Monitoring shows symptoms, not causes: a rising error rate still requires investigation, and coverage gaps on secondary connections can hide problems that later affect primary flows.
