API Routing Rule

An API routing rule is a configuration that decides which endpoint or environment receives a given request.

Instead of hardcoding one destination, the rule inspects context such as lead source, record type, or region and directs traffic accordingly.

A practical example

Example: a rule sends leads tagged 'demo-internal' to the staging CRM while all other leads flow to the production CRM, so sales never sees test records.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Confirm rules can branch on the fields you actually use, such as source, country, or campaign ID.
  • Ask how rule changes are tested and versioned before they affect live traffic.
  • Check whether the vendor logs which rule matched each request for troubleshooting.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Routing rules add decision logic that can misfire when field values change, so every rule needs an owner and a documented fallback destination.
