API Service Level

An API service level defines the performance targets for a specific API dependency: expected response time, availability, and error rates.

It is narrower than a full service agreement because it covers only the interface your integration calls, not the vendor's whole service.

A practical example

Example: before promising sales instant lead alerts, a team documents that the CRM's create-record API should respond within two seconds during business hours.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask for documented latency and availability targets for each API your workflows depend on.
  • Check whether targets are measured and reported, or only stated in marketing material.
  • Confirm what happens during degradation: throttling, queuing, or dropped requests.

Limitations and tradeoffs

API service levels describe expectations, not guarantees you can enforce unilaterally, so critical workflows still need retry logic and a fallback path when the API underperforms.
