Data Adapter

A data adapter is a component that converts one system's data format into another's, handling differences in field names, data types, and structure.

Unlike a full application connector, it focuses on format conversion rather than complete connectivity to a specific app.

A practical example

Example: an adapter maps a legacy lead file's 'prospect_email' column and phone format into the clean schema a modern marketing platform expects, without custom scripts.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Verify the adapter handles your actual mismatches: nested fields, date formats, and character encodings.
  • Check whether transformations are configurable in the interface or require vendor involvement.
  • Ask how adapter changes are tested when either side updates its schema.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Adapters silently drop or distort data when they meet unexpected values, so you need validation reports showing what was converted, skipped, or rejected.
