Data Handoff

A data handoff is the defined transfer point where data passes from one team-owned system to another, together with the agreement about what is delivered, in what format, and who is accountable if it arrives wrong.

It focuses on the ownership boundary and responsibilities, not on transport mechanics like APIs or batch files.

A practical example

Example: marketing hands leads to sales through a defined handoff: every record must include a valid email, consent flag, and lead source, delivered into a designated CRM queue.

If a batch arrives missing consent flags, the receiving team knows exactly which contract clause failed and who owns the fix.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether the platform can validate required fields at the boundary, rejecting or quarantining incomplete records.
  • Check if handoff failures generate notifications to a named owner rather than a shared inbox nobody reads.
  • Confirm both sides can see the same delivery log, so disputes over missing records can be resolved with evidence.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Handoff contracts require maintenance: as fields and teams change, an unreviewed contract becomes a source of the very finger-pointing it was meant to prevent.
