Data Latency

Data latency is the total delay between an event happening in a source system and that event being usable in the destination, including extraction, transport, transformation, and load time.

It is an end-to-end measurement, not a feature claim: a platform advertising real-time sync may still add minutes of processing delay.

A practical example

Example: a sales team wants an alert within five minutes of a high-value prospect visiting the pricing page.

If the tracking pixel, sync job, and CRM update together take forty minutes, the alert arrives after the follow-up window has closed.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask vendors to state latency as an end-to-end figure per pipeline, not just the sync mode.
  • Check whether latency is monitored and alertable, or only visible by digging through job logs.
  • Confirm behavior under load: does delay grow during nightly batch windows or large imports?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Low latency usually costs more in API consumption and infrastructure; chasing real-time everywhere is often unnecessary when only a few triggers need it.
