Data Linkage

Data linkage is the relationship that ties records in different systems together as the same person or account, usually through shared identifiers such as email, CRM ID or a device or account key.

It is the connection itself; the matching methodology that creates it is a separate discipline.

A practical example

Example: a contact exists in the MAP with a personal email and in the CRM with a work email.

Without a linkage rule joining them, the same buyer receives two nurture streams and appears as two leads in reporting.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask which identifiers the platform uses for linkage and whether you can define custom join keys per integration.
  • Check how the platform handles identifier changes, such as a contact switching from personal to work email.
  • Test whether linked records update in both directions, or whether linkage only flows one way.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Linkage quality depends on identifier quality; duplicate or stale keys create false joins that are harder to detect than obvious broken links.
