Data Ownership

Data ownership is the assignment of accountability for a data domain's accuracy to a specific team: who decides what lead status means, who fixes wrong account names, who approves field changes.

It is an organizational decision that must be made per domain, not per system.

A practical example

Example: lead status syncs from MAP to CRM and degrades for months because marketing assumes sales maintains it and sales assumes the reverse.

Naming an owner with a defined definition and review cadence stops the drift.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask vendors what ownership controls they support: field-level edit permissions, change approvals and audit trails.
  • Check whether the platform can enforce one system as the writable source for a domain while others stay read-only.
  • Confirm that ownership can differ per field or object, since one team rarely owns everything.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Ownership is a human accountability, not a technical feature; tools can enforce decisions, but no platform can decide for you who is accountable.
