Data Security

Data security is the set of technical controls that keep lead and account data safe from unauthorized access while it moves between your CRM, marketing platform and other tools.

It covers encryption in transit and at rest, authentication between systems, role-based access, and a documented process for responding to breaches.

A practical example

Example: your marketing automation platform pulls contact records from your CRM every hour.

Security controls determine who can view those records, whether the connection uses encrypted transport, and how quickly you can revoke access if an API key leaks.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask each vendor whether data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and which standards the encryption follows.
  • Review how API credentials are issued, rotated and revoked, and whether least-privilege scopes are supported.
  • Request the vendor's incident response process, including notification timelines and post-incident reporting.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Security controls protect data from exposure, but they do not make your data practices legally compliant; privacy obligations such as consent and retention rules are a separate workstream.
